Pathology
This module explains the principles of the laboratory diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections. It describes what samples should be taken, and how they should be stored and transported. It explains what diagnostic tests are available, how to perform them, their sensitivity and specificity, and their potential advantages or disadvantages. The timescale between exposure and tests for becoming positive is discussed, as is the timescale between treatment and tests becoming negative.

Bacterial STIs and related conditions
This module covers the assessment and management of the various bacterial sexually transmitted infections and related genital infections, their differential diagnosis and complications.

Genital ulcer disease
This module covers the assessment, treatment and management of genital ulcer disease including infectious and non infectious causes.

HPV infection, including HPV related neoplasia

Genital infestations
This module covers the treatment and management of genital infestations including scabies and pubic lice.

Viral hepatitis
This module covers the presentation, natural history, assessment (and referral if necessary) of viral hepatitis.

Sexual assault/abuse and medicolegal issues
This module covers the recognition and clinical management of sexual assault / abuse in adults and children including the medico-legal, consent, competence & psychological and social issues.

Pregnancy and children
This module covers the assessment, treatment and management of genital infections in pregnant women, newborn, infants and children.

HIV special circumstances
This module will expand on specific issues regarding health and social issues that may arise in special groups with HIV infection: HIV positive women including fertility and pregnancy, HIV positive adolescent, including management of antiretroviral therapy, sexual and other risk taking behaviours, HIV positive injecting drug users, and specific health and risk taking behaviour that may arise in HIV positive MSMs.

Vaginal discharge, vulvitis and balanitis
This module covers the common and/or important causes of vaginal discharge, other symptoms and signs associated with vaginal discharge, vulvitis, and balanitis, including infections and genital dermatoses. It includes the diagnostic techniques needed to identify the cause, and appropriate management.

HIV testing and prophylaxis
This module covers the issues to be considered in HIV testing in various settings including risk assessment and the management of positive results including HIV Disclosure and Partner Notification. Risk assessments following potential sexual or occupational exposure to HIV and post exposure prophylaxis are addressed.

Specific assessment and management of HIV
This module covers the natural history of HIV infection, the assessment of HIV-positive individuals and routine monitoring including opportunistic infection prophylaxis and the important management issues for the successful use of antiretrovirals, as well as adverse effects, toxicity and treatment failure.

Assessment and management of opportunistic HIV infections
This module covers the assessment and management of the viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections that occur in HIV infection.

System specific HIV – associated conditions
This module covers the specialist assessment, treatment and management of gastrointestinal, neurological, haematological, dermatological and respiratory presentations of HIV disease.

HIV associated malignancies
This module covers the presentation, assessment and management of HIV-associated malignancies and palliative care of HIV disease.

Public health
This module covers the fundamental concepts of epidemiology, surveillance systems, the public health principles of screening programmes, the synergies and differences between STI and HIV control, and the evidence on structural interventions.

Gynaecology for GUM (genitourinary medicine)
This module covers gynaecological areas which are important for successful practice in genitourinary medicine: normal and abnormal menstruation, normal pregnancy and bleeding problems in early pregnancy, the recognition of gynaecological neoplasia, assessment of people with fertility problems and termination of pregnancy.
