Course Content

Introduction to Breast Imaging
This session gives an overview of normal and abnormal features which may be demonstrated on mammography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast, and describes which signs are commonly associated with benign pathology and malignancy.

Breast Lumps in Women
This session describes the common presenting symptoms and signs of breast lumps, followed by an explanation of the preferred imaging protocols and imaging appearances of the more likely diagnoses. Cases include typical carcinoma, multifocal carcinoma, phyllodes tumour, fibroadenoma, lactating adenoma cyst and galactocoele.

Breast Anatomy, Physiology and Imaging
This session will help you to appreciate the clinical relevance of breast anatomy and the effects on the breast of age and alteration in hormonal environment; the principles underlying the techniques of mammography, breast ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and their clinical applications; and the normal appearances of the breast on mammography, ultrasound and MRI.

Breast Pain and Inflammation
This session has been developed to help you understand the imaging and management of conditions which present with breast pain and inflammation.

Assessment of Microcalcification
This session describes the appearances of mammographic microcalcification, its differential diagnosis and its clinical and pathological significance.

Breast Screening
This session has been developed to enable you to understand the organisation of the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and the assessment work-up of recalled cases. You will also review the evidence base for ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) breast screening, including screening Hodgkin's patients and women otherwise at high risk for breast cancer.

Nipple Disorders and Papillary Disease of the Breast
This session has been developed to help the trainee understand the clinical conditions that affect the nipple, the role of imaging in patients with nipple disease, and the imaging appearances and clinical significance of papillary disorders of the breast.

Radiological Assessment of Women with Breast Implants
This session will help you to understand the various types of breast implants and their complications. It also covers the methods and challenges of radiological assessment of women with implants.

The Treated Breast
This session covers the 'normal' imaging appearances following cancer treatment and the appearances of local recurrence.

Male Breast Disease
This session will help you gain an understanding of the risk factors for, and clinical and imaging features of, common male breast disease.

Parenchymal Deformity or Radial Scars in the Breast
This session describes the imaging and histopathological features of radial scars, and subsequent management. It also describes the imaging features, differential diagnosis and assessment algorithm for management of mammographic architectural distortion.

Breast Intervention
This session provides an overview of the indications for intervention on breast disease. It also gives important information about intervention methods, and about the imaging modalities that are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease.

Staging of Breast Cancer and Metastatic Disease
This session describes the rationale and evidence for staging breast cancer and the links between stage and prognosis.

Mammographic Reporting Template
This session provides a structured approach to interpreting and reporting both screening and symptomatic mammograms.

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis and Contrast-enhanced Spectral Mammography
This session provides an introduction to digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM), two advanced mammographic techniques which have been shown to improve the sensitivity and specificity of mammography. You will learn about their roles, and study how each is performed and reviewed.
